Assessing functional abilities in occupational therapy is a process that is spread out over a few hours and sheds light on individuals' abilities and limitations.
The assessment includes an interview, questionnaires, standardized tests and simulations of tasks, all of which provide information about clients, such as their medical condition, how they perceive the situation, their joint strength and mobility, how well they tolerate remaining in a static position, their ability to handle a load, their walking endurance, their upper limb coordination and dexterity etc.
This assessment may be requested by the attending physician, by clients themselves, by the organization responsible for the payment of benefits (CSST, SAAQ) or by an insurance company. Following the assessment, the occupational therapist can provide an opinion as to clients' ability to perform the physical requirements of their job (i.e., sedentary, light, moderate, heavy…).
