Acupuncture is a Chinese medical practice that has been used for over 5,000 years in the Far East and around the world. This technique is founded on the belief that there exists a vital energy, essential for life, that flows through the body via a network of pathways called meridians. If energy flows harmoniously, there is balance and good health.
On the other hand, the energy flow can be slowed down or blocked by factors such as stress, poor nutrition, changes in climate and the environment, which can result in fatigue or pain. The client assessment process includes a detailed questionnaire covering all aspects of health, a physical examination (including the tongue), pulse readings at different points and palpations at strategic locations along the meridians. Treatment involves using fine needles to stimulate certain points that have particular therapeutic functions, in order to release blocked energy and restore its flow. When needles are placed, clients experience a mosquito bite-like sensation that lasts for a mere fraction of a second and leaves no mark. In addition, the sedative effect of acupuncture often helps clients to relax during treatment.
