What is bursitis? PDF Print E-mail

Bursitis is the inflammation of a sac of fluid, known as "bursa," that is found between bones, tendons and muscles (especially close to the joints).

The bursa helps reduce friction between structures during movement. Bursitis may occur following a sudden blow or repeated friction that causes inflammation of the bursa. It usually results in significant, localized swelling, as well as in reduced joint mobility, accompanied by pain. Physiotherapy uses different methods such as manipulative therapy, electrotherapy and heat therapy to help reduce bursa inflammation as quickly as possible and restore joint mobility.
