What is muscle strain? PDF Print E-mail

Muscle strain is one of the most common sports injuries. It refers to the stretching or tearing of muscle fiber resulting from a sudden movement or stretch, and often occurs in the large muscles of the thigh.

It is often felt as intense pain in the affected muscle, generally involving a limitation in the range of movement as well as varying degrees of hematoma. The most frequent causes are:

  • Inadequate warm-up
  • Poor flexibility
  • Overtraining

Initial treatment (during the first 48 hours) usually consists of icing, immobilization and compression with a pressure dressing. Subsequent physiotherapy treatments help to ensure optimal recovery.
