Sprains occur when the structures that stabilize joints and limit extreme movements are forcibly stretched. The ankle joint is designed to adapt in a way that allows you to maintain your balance on uneven surfaces.

However, sometimes the ankle fails to react appropriately following a sudden fast movement, which is when a sprain - or what is commonly known as a "twisted ankle" - occurs. The main symptom is pain, often more marked on one side of the ankle (i.e., the sprained side). There may also be swelling and discoloration. Immediate and frequent icing is recommended during the first 48 hours following a sprain, as is the use of crutches to keep weight off the injured limb. Subsequent physiotherapy treatment can facilitate recovery and help prevent relapses through targeted exercise programs.
